How do I dispose of propane tanks?

Recycle empty propane tanks (max. BBQ size) or contact Whatcom County Disposal of Toxics. Includes backpacking/camp stove fuel canisters, lanterns, and torches.

How do I prepare antifreeze for recycling?

Antifreeze only. Do not mix with anything else. Store in a secure container for transport. Max. 5 gallons per visit.

How do I prepare appliances for recycling?

Non-compressor appliances are charged at recycling rate. Appliance with compressors (refrigerator, freezer, air conditioner, etc.) are charged as garbage and accepted in scrap metal drop box. 

How do I prepare batteries for recycling?

No cracked or leaking batteries. 

Vehicle and Boat (Lead Acid). Leave battery caps on. 

Rechargeable batteries are not accepted. Contact Disposal of Toxics.

Recycle alkaline and carbon-zinc (household) batteries at a retailer or dispose of as garbage.

How do I prepare bottles, cans, and plastic containers for recycling?

Rinsed and clean items only. All colors and numbers accepted. All caps, lids, and rings accepted.

Remove and recycle paper labels from tin cans. 

Remove metal handles from buckets. 

Flatten aluminum foil and plastic bottles. 

How do I prepare cardboard for recycling?

Remove packing materials. Flatten.

How do I prepare lead foil and fish weights for recycling?

Clean. Flatten foil.

How do I prepare motor oil recycling?

Motor oil only. Do not mix with anything else. Store in a secure container for transport. Max. 5 gallons per visit. 

How do I prepare oil filters for recycling?

Drain into a collection pan. See instructions for recycling drained oil above. Store in a secure container for transport.

How do I prepare paper for recycling?

Clean materials only.

How do I prepare scrap metal for recycling?

Clean materials only. 

Aerosol Cans. Non-hazardous and empty. Cap on OK. 

Holiday lights, extension cords, and wire. Coil/bundle and tie.

License Plates – Remove or invalidate the month/year tabs. Bend plate. Contact WA DOL to recycle these plates: 

  • Commercial vehicle plates (gross weight over 12,000 pounds)
  • Personalized plates
  • Baseball stadium plates
  • Horseless carriage plates
  • Amateur radio operator (HAM) plates
  • Amateur radio operator (HAM) plates
  • Pearl Harbor survivor plates
  • Gold Star parent plates

Propane tanks (max. BBQ size and including backpacking/camp stove fuel canisters, lanterns, and torches). Empty. Remove any valve.
