5-Star rated since 2007 and recertified as a Tier 3 Champion in 2022, SCC was the first garbage and recycling collection company in Washington to be included in the EnviroStars program. Our leadership in waste reduction, sustainable business practices, community outreach, and education have earned us the highest ratings possible.
Toward Zero Waste
As a Toward Zero Waste Pioneer in Sustainable Connections’ Toward Zero Waste campaign, SSC practices waste reduction and reuse, while recycling more than 80% of our business waste.
Green Power Leadership Partner
Since 2007, 100% of our electricity has been generated through PSE’s Green Power program. We use just over 200,000 kilowatt hours of renewable, domestically-produced, non-polluting, alternative energy annually.
Our main office is recognized as a League of American Bicyclists Gold Bicycle Friendly Business, and our Bellingham Drop Box Facility & Recycling Center was awarded Silver. Our drivers are trained in bicycle-friendly ways of the road, and we support local cycling organizations and events.
Whatcom Smart Trips
Since 2006, SCC employees have saved hundreds of miles in car trips per month by biking, walking, carpooling, and taking public transportation as part of Whatcom Smart Trips. Employees who make at least eight Smart Trips per month are eligible for rewards and prize drawings from SCC and Whatcom Smart Trips.
Running on Biodiesel Fuel
Since 2005, SSC’s garbage and recycling trucks have been running on biodegradable, non-toxic biodiesel fuel. Virtually free of sulfur and aromatics, biodiesel reduces harmful emissions by up to 20% for our fleet.
We tested biodiesel in a number of our trucks for 18 months with no maintenance issues or loss in performance. We switched over any of our trucks that could accept biodiesel and have never looked back.
FoodPlus! Yardwaste Pioneer
Diverting yard waste, food scraps, and other green waste from landfills by composting reduces the release of greenhouse gasses and provides rich soil amendment, available for sale in Whatcom County. We’re proud to offer this service to help preserve the natural beauty of our environment.
Single-Stream Recycling Pilot Program
Innovating ways to make recycling even easier benefits both the environment and our customers. In 2022, we partnered with the City of Bellingham to conduct a pilot program to evaluate single-stream recycling in Bellingham’s Edgemoor neighborhood. This project held great potential for increasing the amount of material collected and reducing truck emissions while simplifying the recycling process for our customers.
