County Council Considering Changes to Recycling Service
Single-stream curbside recycling may be offered to more SSC customers after the Whatcom County Council voted unanimously to set a March 19 public hearing to allow the service under its contract with SSC, similar to steps the Bellingham City Council took in 2023. The proposed changes would include replacing the current Stack Three bin recycling system with a single-stream (or commingled) system using one large Toter for all basic residential service. TUESDAY 2/4/2025 SERVICE ALERT: SSC is running full operations today. If we are unable to service your account due to snow/ice conditions, we will take additional garbage the following week, and additional recycling and FoodPlus on your next scheduled day of service.
Garbage: Collected the following week (inc. every-other-week and monthly customers). Use plastic bags for extra garbage.
Recycling: Collected on your next regularly scheduled day. Please place extra material next to recycling bins in an open cardboard box or plastic container (basket, bucket, etc.) no larger than a curbside recycling bin.
FoodPlus! Yardwaste: Collected on your next regularly scheduled day. Please place extra bulky yard waste (branches, etc.) next to your FoodPlus! Yardwaste toter. For smaller yard debris, food scraps or compostable packaging, please bag in a thick paper bag designed for yard debris or a compostable bag.

If you cannot wait until your next regularly scheduled pick-up, we will accept garbage and recycling, including extra material as detailed above, at no charge at one of SSC’s three Transfer Stations in Bellingham, Birch Bay, or Cedarville (NOT RDS or Republic)
